“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.”
I trained as a software engineer and kept widening the work: into design, meaning the people and the problem, and into business, meaning the model, the launch and the numbers. Below are all the data points from my full résumé, from 1997 to today, and the lines I can draw between them looking back. Every dot opens. If you prefer reading, the plain-text version has everything.
From an I to a T to an M
Each stem is how deep I went in one discipline; the bar across the top joins the disciplines I had touched by then. Drag through the years. Time spent in roles and things done give two honest answers; by default each counts for half.
M
How the days were split
How the work in each role split between tech, design and business, as I state it, reviewed in October 2026. Read top to bottom: the mix was there from the first freelance years, shrank inside most engineering jobs, and comes back whenever I build something of my own.
The toolbox over time
JavaScript is the one constant from 2003 to now. Java carried the first fifteen years. Design tools join in 2014, and launch tools in 2023.
The reach, in numbers
The figures the résumé gives. Each one opens the data point it comes from.
The Developer’s Conference, city by year
Badges and medals
The threads
None of these were planned. Each thread links dots from different years and disciplines that, looking back, turned out to be the same idea.
